Taxi Driver

Yet another movie Hud told me I wouldn't want to watch, but he was wrong. (I am one step closer to watching The Godfather.) Yes, there's a child hooker and a date to the porn theater and a bloody shootout for a climax, and I wouldn't want to watch it with my mom, but I survived it and was even intrigued by it.

I can't help but compare this one to Midnight Cowboy. Not that they tried to tell the same story, but they're both about the seedy side of New York. However, Taxi Driver is a far better movie, and I think I can attribute that to Robert DeNiro vs. Jon Voight. Though I'm sure some of the credit is also due to Martin Scorsese vs. John Schlesinger. (Who?)

So here's an interesting question. (The Sixth Sense ruined me, by the way.) Did Travis Bickle really survive that shootout? And win the acclaim of the world, including Betsy? I can't help but wonder if that was all his dying fantasy.

  1. I definitely think he died in the shooting at the end. And you need to see The Godfather!

  2. I have never seen this or the Godfather, probably for the same reasons as you Kathy. But maybe it's time. I wonder if the library has them??

  3. AR--people keep telling me I need to see The Godfather! So I finally added all 3 to my netflix queue. Right now they're at positions 292-294 (!!) but I may eventually move them closer to the top . . .

Mandy--maybe you can be my guinea pig and watch The Godfather first. If you like it, I'll bump it up!

  4. I am down to 30 in my queue, amazingly short for me. I found that I can get so many decent movies for free at the library that I am depleting the list. I think I would probably get to The Godfather before you!

  5. I think you probably will, too! Not only is my netflix queue far too long, but my movie-watching has *really* slowed down. I may have to change the name of my blog!

  6. I watched the Godfather! So I can check that off the bucket list or what have you. I guess I am glad I watched it, but it didn't really move me like many other movies have. I don't know if it was just too old or it's just not my thing, (although I loved The Sapranos). The most famous scenes were not a shock because I had heard about them. And really the whole movie is about revenge, I didn't really get much more from it.

I did enjoy seeing some of the actors so young, especially Al Pacino. I even watched half of the Godfather II, which has a young Robert De Niro but after 2 hours it went to an "Intermission" screen, and I gave up.

I wouldn't bump it up too high on your queue. I got it free from the library so it was worth it for me!

  7. WOW, an intermission at 2 hours? I think I would have given up too.

I'll probably still watch The Godfather someday, but you haven't made me especially eager to do so. :)

  8. I had heard II was better than one, so tried. Maybe I'll get it again some time since it was free.
