Alice in Wonderland

I think it took me about three weeks to watch this movie. That's really not so much an insult to the film as it is a testament to the fact that my mind was elsewhere. But. If it had been truly compelling I would have made a point of watching it over a much more brief time span.

"Visually stunning" is such a cliché, but that's what this movie is. Everywhere you look your eye is drawn to strange, wild, vivid scenery and the oddest of characters. The images quite overwhelm the story itself. I almost wonder if it wouldn't be just as entertaining if watched with no sound. Or maybe with a Pink Floyd album as a soundtrack . . . ?

Despite the source material, this movie really isn't for kids. Not that there's anything especially inappropriate or scary in it, but my guess is that most kids would prefer the good old Disney animated version over this one.

Did you recognize the Knave of Hearts? I did. (Hello! McFly!)

  1. This has been sitting on my DVR since around Christmas. I need to get around to watching it. I'm thinking I might wait until I read the book first. I think most people have had the same reaction as you.

  2. Crispin Clover (The Knave of Hearts) was one reason added to watch this film (I love this guy!!) - besides that I am a Tim Burton and Helena Bonham-Carter aficionada - well, and I like Johnny Depp.. :")

That is an alluring idea to watch this move just with some added music and no other sound.. Maybe I try it some time.. ;")

  3. It really was visually sstunning. That sounds silly, but wow. I did recognize Crispin Glover, he's such a unique guy and he always kinda freaks me out.

  4. Kristi--did you know that this movie is more of a sequel to the book? A lot of the book's characters are in the movie, but it's basically about Alice going back to Wonderland as an adult (only it's actually Underland!) after having been there as a child. You may still want to read the book first, but I just thought I'd warn you not to expect the same story out of the movie!

FIP--I can't really take credit for that idea--have you ever heard of "The Wizard of Floyd" or "The Dark Side of Oz?" That's when you listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album while watching The Wizard of Oz with no sound. If I remember right you have to go through the album 2 or 3 times, since the movie is longer.

AR--Too funny that CG kinda freaks you out. He didn't freak me out as George McFly, but his picture on imdb.com is kinda freaky!

  5. I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up. I still think I'll read it before I watch the movie.
